Land and Sky - Morgain Bailey

This work is the result of an ongoing practice of quiet observation of the ephemeral beauty of changing light conditions on the snow-covered hills of the northeast. The way the land and sky mirror and dissolve into one another is a constant source of wonder. Each of these photos is a love letter to a place that existed only momentarily and which continues to ask for attention. These photographs are letters to my future self.

Reflections on the Theme of Boundaries

In the context of these photographs, the theme of Boundaries relates to the physical boundary between sky and land, which is constantly changing, disappearing and re-emerging. I like how this type of landscape is both very quiet and very dramatic.

The act of making the photographs involves more protective boundaries. I have to get up before sunrise and it's typically really cold - anywhere from minus 11 up to around 15 degrees. I have to plan everything carefully when using a tripod, cable release, etc... in weather where my hands can only handle a few minutes with thin gloves on.

I hope these images end up crossing the boundary of time. As I am making them, they are what I think I will want to see 20 years from now.
