How do we define portraiture? What does it mean to make a portrait of someone/thing? This week will be looking beyond just the eyes and face and seeing other ways to distill the essence of an individual through an image or set of images.

If you make an image about someone is it a portrait even if they are not present in the frame? Join us this week as we explore five photographers’ different interpretations of this idea. Some chose to photograph objects, spaces, and even themselves, in collections of images about loved ones. Some chose to prod at more specific genres within portraiture such as the maternity portrait or the corporate headshot in an effort to expand what those more commercialized genres could look like if they were more about seeking inner truths.
