Photography and Representation with Titus Brooks Heagins

Titus Brooks Heagins is a documentary photographer and educator adept at capturing the full emotional and cultural spectrum of diverse communities. This webinar will cover his beginnings as a photographer followed by a discussion of important projects that feature his unique and powerful approach to photography.

Titus will be discussing images from Cuba, Haiti, Songs of the South, Durham Stories, and With Every Breath I Take, his portraiture series that features the Cuban transgender community.

As I photograph I am constantly reminded of the men and women who lived in my neighborhood. Most were domestics, working in the homes of whites, the men held jobs as elevator operators, gardeners, or other jobs no one else wanted.

So when I photograph the experience is a collaboration between myself as photographer and the sitter to construct a visual image that is a contradiction of negative images of representation.
