Making Photo Books - Rita Kovtun
February 4 - March 11, Thursdays, 5–6:30 p.m. EST, meets for six-week - Group is Full
“A photobook is an autonomous art form, comparable with a piece of sculpture, a play or a film. The photographs lose their own photographic character as things ‘in themselves’ and become parts, translated into printing ink, of a dramatic event called a book.” —Ralph Prins
This practice group is an introduction to making photo books. Participants should have an idea or project ready for the book format as we will be learning by doing. Together we will explore the unique possibilities of photo books, from ideation, to sequencing, to layout/design, to publication. The group will include discussion of the ins and outs of the book-making process and facilitation of the development of participants’ book projects. The goal is for each participant to create a mock book by the conclusion of the group that is then ready for production (whether hand-making an artist book, self-publishing through an online printer, or pitching to an editor).
Rita Kovtun is a Russian-American artist who has self-published five photo books. Her recent work in photography, writing, and music has focused on themes of memory, healing, family history, and the immigrant experience.
