Stripping Away the Layers with Kacey Jeffers

Artist talk with Kacey Jeffers

Recorded May 5th, 2020

We joined photographer Kacey Jeffers online from his home in Nevis to talk about the importance of stripping away the layers of what it means to be a photographer in order to get to what he calls a “presence-first” approach to photographing his immediate community.

Kacey shared work from his personal project Everyday is Another Chance and his debut book, Uniform, a localized portrait of youth culture that merges elements of portraiture, fashion, and documentary photography.

Kacey Jeffers is a self-taught photographer. Growing up in Nevis, he was intrigued by the human condition. Curious to know more he ventured out, camera in hand, to New York City.

In 2018 Kacey returned to his home on the island of Nevis in the Caribbean after his visa expired. Here he solidified his desire to strip away artifice, to sustain an eye-to-eye connection, and create cross-genre narratives that are sensitive and authentic.

It is said of Kacey’s work that “every frame is a resolution to unearth self-truth, both theirs and his.”
